The free encyclopediafor open-source software.

GitPedia transforms any public GitHub repository into a rich, Wikipedia-style article. Stats, contributors, documentation, language breakdown, related projects — all on one clean page. Free forever.

Principles

Built on four hard commitments.

Instant

Any public repo becomes a full wiki article in seconds. Powered by live GitHub data.

Open

No account. No paywall. No ads. The open-source world deserves an open encyclopedia.

Encyclopedic

Wikipedia-style articles — structured, readable, citable. Not just a README mirror.

Private

No tracking. No cookies. Your browsing history stays in your browser, period.

How it works

From URL to wiki article in three steps.

STEP 01

Search any repo

Enter a GitHub URL, owner/repo, or search by keyword.

STEP 02

Article generated

Live stats, README, contributors, languages — all assembled into a structured page.

STEP 03

Explore & discover

Follow related repos, browse trending projects by language or topic.

Data

Where the data comes from.

GitHub REST API

All repository metadata, README content, contributor lists, language statistics, and release history comes directly from the official GitHub API. Data is cached for 1 hour to balance freshness with rate limits.

AI-Generated Summaries (optional)

When available, GitPedia uses GPT-4o-mini to generate a Wikipedia-style lead paragraph synthesizing the README and repo metadata into a concise encyclopedic introduction. This feature is optional — all articles work without it.

Stack

Built in the open.

GitPedia is built with Next.js 14 App Router, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. Server Components + Incremental Static Regeneration deliver fast, SEO-friendly pages at scale.

No tracking. No accounts. No ads. GitPedia does not collect personal data, set tracking cookies, or require authentication.

Recently viewed repositories are stored locally in your browser's localStorage and never leave your device. No analytics platform is active.
